• Fix "Unidentified Network" error in Windows 10

  • Today I was called to a client that had no access to the Internet, despite everything having worked yesterday and the Internet working perfectly on other devices.

The wireless adapter was detecting the router, but was showing no internet access. Running the troubleshooter gave no information, turning wi-fi off and back on made no difference, disabling the adapter and re-enabling didn’t help. All the IP4 and IP6 settings appeared to be correct, with an IP address being set automatically. Turning off the firewall made no difference; everything appeared to be correct, with no reason for the Internet being inaccessible.

Visiting the Network and Sharing centre showed Unidentified Network, and running the troubleshooter again showed that the adapter had no IP address, so it appeared to be the “unidentified network” bug that has been appearing in Windows 10.

The answer is to reset the TCP/IP stack, release and renew the IP address and flush and reset the DNS client resolver cache. This sounds horrendously complicated, but is actually fairly straightforward 🙂

First, right-click on the Windows Start button and from the pop-up menu, choose Command Prompt (Admin) and choose Yes if prompted by Windows.

In the command prompt window, type

    • netsh winsock reset and press Enter
    • netsh int ip reset and press Enter
    • ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter

This worked for me, although Microsoft suggest using all of the following:

    • netsh winsock reset and press Enter
    • netsh int ip reset and press Enter
    • ipconfig /release (Enter)
    • ipconfig /renew (Enter)
    • ipconfig /flushdns (Enter)

After this, restart your computer and you should find that your Internet connection is now working again! If not, then it could be one of the other issues mentioned in this post.
